Georgia deer season starts with the county color map, then the license and Harvest Record
Georgia WRD's 2026-2027 guide is a county-color map, not a single statewide deer calendar. Private-land dates change by color zone, some counties have archery-only or alternating buck-only windows, and deer hunters generally need the right hunting license or big-game privilege plus a current Harvest Record. All deer harvests must be reported through Game Check within 24 hours.
Private-land archery opens September 12, 2026, but the exact either-sex or buck-only window depends on the county color zone.
Primitive weapons season is either-sex in the current guide.
Most private-land firearms windows open October 17, but some zones and counties run alternating buck-only and either-sex periods.
The statewide limit is 12 deer: no more than 10 antlerless and no more than 2 antlered.
All big game hunters need a current Harvest Record.
Record the harvest before moving the deer, then report it through Game Check.
Georgia Deer Season 2026-2027: Dates, Zones and License Requirements
Georgia deer planning starts with the WRD county color map. The private-land schedule changes by zone, and public-land or federal-land hunts are separate enough that you should not carry a private-land date over without checking the area listing.
For license basics, start with Georgia Hunting License. For a broader deer overview, use Georgia Deer Hunting and Deer Hunting License Guide.
Private-Land Color Zones
Georgia’s 2026-2027 private-land guide is a color-zone calendar. The county color on the WRD map controls the legal deer window.
| Color zone | Counties | 2026-2027 private-land deer window |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Counties marked green on the WRD map | Archery Sept. 12-Oct. 9 either-sex; primitive weapons Oct. 10-16 either-sex; firearms Oct. 3-4 antlerless only; Oct. 17-Jan. 10, 2027 either-sex. |
| Gray | Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton | Archery Sept. 12-Jan. 31, 2027 either-sex. |
| Pink | Baker, Calhoun, Decatur, Early, Grady, Miller, Mitchell, Seminole, Thomas | Archery Sept. 12-Sept. 27 antlered bucks only; Sept. 28-Oct. 9 either-sex; Jan. 16-Jan. 31, 2027 either-sex; primitive weapons Oct. 10-16 either-sex; firearms Oct. 3-4 antlerless only; Oct. 17-Jan. 15, 2027 either-sex. |
| Orange | Dawson, Gilmer, Habersham, Lumpkin, Murray, Pickens, Stephens, Whitfield, White | Archery Sept. 12-Oct. 9 either-sex; primitive weapons Oct. 10-16 either-sex; firearms Oct. 17-Nov. 5 antlered bucks only; Nov. 6-Nov. 12 either-sex; Nov. 13-Nov. 19 antlered bucks only; Nov. 20-Nov. 26 either-sex; Nov. 27-Dec. 27 antlered bucks only; Dec. 28-Jan. 10, 2027 either-sex. |
| Yellow | Rabun, Towns | Archery Sept. 12-Oct. 9 either-sex; primitive weapons Oct. 10-16 either-sex; firearms Oct. 17-Nov. 27 antlered bucks only; Nov. 28-Nov. 29 either-sex; Nov. 30-Dec. 31 antlered bucks only; Jan. 1, 2027 either-sex; Jan. 2-Jan. 10, 2027 antlered bucks only. |
| Cyan | Fannin, Union | Archery Sept. 12-Oct. 9 either-sex; primitive weapons Oct. 10-16 either-sex; firearms Oct. 17-Nov. 5 antlered bucks only; Nov. 6-Nov. 12 either-sex; Nov. 13-Dec. 31 antlered bucks only; Jan. 1, 2027 either-sex; Jan. 2-Jan. 10, 2027 antlered bucks only. |
| Extended archery | Baker, Barrow, Bibb, Calhoun, Chatham, Cherokee, Clarke, Clayton, Cobb, Columbia, Decatur, DeKalb, Douglas, Early, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Grady, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, Miller, Mitchell, Muscogee, Paulding, Richmond, Rockdale, Seminole, Thomas | Sept. 12-Jan. 31, 2027 either-sex. |
| Extended firearms | Baker, Calhoun, Decatur, Early, Grady, Miller, Mitchell, Seminole, Thomas | Oct. 17-Jan. 15, 2027 either-sex. |
Two weapon exceptions matter even on private land. Firearms deer hunting is not allowed in Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton north of GA Highway 92, or the Jekyll Island portion of Glynn County. In the portion of Forsyth County south of GA Highway 20, only shotguns and muzzleloaders may be used.
Archery equipment remains legal during primitive weapons and firearms seasons, but the county color table still controls whether the legal take is either-sex, antlerless only, or buck-only.
Bag Limits and Antler Rules
Georgia’s statewide deer limit is 12 per season. No more than 10 may be antlerless and no more than 2 may be antlered. One of the antlered deer must have at least four points, one inch or longer, on one side of the antlers or at least a 15-inch outside spread.
Some counties add stricter antler rules. Hancock, Harris, Meriwether, Montgomery, Randolph, Talbot, and Troup require the 4-point or 15-inch rule on each legal antlered buck. Dooly and Macon use a minimum 15-inch outside spread.
If your main question is antlerless opportunity, pair this page with Doe Tags by State. Georgia is not a lottery-style doe-tag state, but the color-zone calendar still controls antlerless harvest windows.
License, Big Game, and Harvest Record
Georgia deer hunters generally need a basic hunting license plus the big-game privilege unless a specific exemption applies. WRD’s license chart also lists a free Harvest Record for deer, and that record is separate from the paid license or bundled privilege.
Georgia’s Harvest Record rule is broad. The current WRD page says all big game hunters need one, including youth, landowners, honorary, lifetime, and sportsman’s license holders, and hunters who are otherwise exempt from buying a hunting or big-game license.
Georgia Game Check
All harvests must be reported within 24 hours through Georgia Game Check. The official WRD guidance also says to record the harvest on the Harvest Record before moving the carcass.
Use the Harvest Record immediately, then submit the deer through the Game Check system online or in the app. Keep the confirmation number with your records.
Public Land, WMAs, and Federal Land
The private-land color-zone table is not a WMA calendar. WMA, VPA, state park, PFA, refuge, forest, quota, sign-in, and check-in hunts can have different dates, weapons rules, bag limits, and area permits.
Before hunting a Georgia public-land deer area, confirm:
- The individual area listing or map.
- Whether the hunt is quota, sign-in, check-in, bonus deer, or general access.
- Weapon season and legal equipment for that area.
- Either-sex, buck-only, antler restriction, or bonus-deer language.
- Any WMA sign-in or online check-in requirement.
- Any CWD, carcass movement, or emergency rule update.
Public-land planning should start from WRD’s interactive hunting map or the current hunting guide, not from the private-land county color alone.
Georgia WRD’s federal-land summary also shows that some federal units add their own permit, baiting, or night-hunting rules, so the federal property page should be checked before the hunt.
Before You Hunt Georgia Deer in 2026-2027
Use this final checklist:
- Confirm whether the hunt is private land, WMA, VPA, state park, PFA, or federal land.
- If private land, match the county to the official WRD color-zone map.
- Confirm archery, primitive weapons, firearms, extended archery, or special hunt dates.
- Confirm whether the date is buck-only, antlerless-only, or either-sex.
- Confirm the statewide bag limit and any county antler restriction.
- Buy or confirm the required hunting license and big-game privilege.
- Add the current Harvest Record.
- Know the Game Check process before the hunt.
- Recheck WRD for WMA, quota, CWD, or emergency rule changes.
Georgia gives long private-land deer opportunity, but the legal details are county-specific and land-type-specific. The color map and Harvest Record matter as much as the opener.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does Georgia deer season start in 2026?
On private land, archery opens September 12, 2026, but the legal date depends on the county color zone. Some counties are archery-only or have alternating buck-only and either-sex windows, so the map controls the answer.
What is the Georgia deer bag limit for 2026-2027?
Georgia's statewide deer limit is 12 per season. No more than 10 may be antlerless and no more than 2 may be antlered. One of the antlered deer must have at least 4 points on one side or a 15-inch outside spread, and some counties have additional antler restrictions.
Do Georgia deer hunters need a Harvest Record and Game Check?
Yes. Georgia WRD requires a current Harvest Record for all deer hunters, including landowners, lifetime and sportsman's license holders, and hunters otherwise exempt from license purchase. Deer must be entered on the Harvest Record before moving the carcass, then reported through Game Check within 24 hours.
Are WMA and federal-land deer hunts the same as private land?
No. WMA, refuge, state park, PFA, quota, and federal-land hunts can have different dates, weapon rules, check-in or checkout steps, and bag limits. The area listing controls, not the private-land color map.
