North Carolina deer season uses regional zones, county rows, and CWD early-season overlays
NCWRC's 2026-2027 deer table lists Northeastern and Southeastern gun seasons from October 17-January 1, Central gun from November 14-January 1, Northwestern gun from November 21-January 1, and Western gun from November 28-January 1. CWD Management Areas also have an August 22-23 special early antlered season.
Most North Carolina deer zones open archery on September 12, 2026.
Northeastern, Southeastern, and Southeastern CWD rows open gun season October 17.
Central and Northwestern CWD rows open gun season November 14.
Western rows open gun season November 28, with county-specific antlerless dates.
North Carolina Deer Season Map 2026-2027: The Short Version
North Carolina deer season is best read from the map first and the date table second. NCWRC divides the state into regional season rows, then adds county-specific and CWD Management Area overlays.
The 2026-2027 main weapon framework is:
| North Carolina deer season row | Archery | Blackpowder | Gun |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northeastern | Sept. 12-Oct. 2, 2026 | Oct. 3-16, 2026 | Oct. 17, 2026-Jan. 1, 2027 |
| Southeastern | Sept. 12-Oct. 2, 2026 | Oct. 3-16, 2026 | Oct. 17, 2026-Jan. 1, 2027 |
| Southeastern CWD Management Area | Aug. 22-23 special early season; archery Sept. 12-Oct. 2 | Oct. 3-16 | Oct. 17-Jan. 1 |
| Central | Sept. 12-Oct. 30, 2026 | Oct. 31-Nov. 13, 2026 | Nov. 14, 2026-Jan. 1, 2027 |
| Northwestern | Sept. 12-Nov. 6, 2026 | Nov. 7-20, 2026 | Nov. 21, 2026-Jan. 1, 2027 |
| Northwestern CWD Management Area | Aug. 22-23 special early season; archery Sept. 12-Oct. 30 | Oct. 31-Nov. 13 | Nov. 14-Jan. 1 |
| Western | Sept. 12-Nov. 13, 2026 | Nov. 14-27, 2026 | Nov. 28, 2026-Jan. 1, 2027 |
That table does not remove the need for the map. Several western county groups have different antlerless dates, and CWD Management Areas change the early season and weapon timing.
For license context, use North Carolina Hunting License and North Carolina Deer Hunting. For comparison across states, use Deer Season by State.
Why the Map Matters
North Carolina has five broad season zones plus CWD Management Area rows:
- Northeastern.
- Southeastern.
- Central.
- Northwestern.
- Western.
- Southeastern CWD Management Area.
- Northwestern CWD Management Area.
The county list determines the row. A hunter near a zone boundary should not guess from region names. Use NCWRC’s deer zone map or the county list in the current digest.
Game lands generally follow the season for the county where they are located unless otherwise noted, but the digest warns hunters to check the Game Lands section for additional restrictions and gun antlerless dates. This is especially important when a game land straddles county lines or has permit hunts.
CWD Special Early Season
For 2026-2027, NCWRC lists a special early season in CWD Management Areas on August 22-23, 2026. During that weekend, antlered deer with antlers or spikes protruding through the skin may be taken with any lawful weapon, including on game lands.
The listed CWD Management Area counties for the special early season include Cumberland, Forsyth, Sampson, Stokes, Surry, Wilkes, and Yadkin.
NCWRC also states that there is no mandatory CWD sampling requirement during the 2026-2027 season, but voluntary testing remains available and is recommended in CWD Management Areas and surveillance areas before consuming venison.
Do not confuse the CWD special early season with the regular archery opener. It is limited by area, date, and legal deer language.
Antlered and Antlerless Dates
NCWRC’s deer table separates antlered and antlerless dates. In many rows, antlerless deer are legal on all open days of the applicable antlered archery, blackpowder, or gun season. In western rows, antlerless gun dates can be narrower.
Examples from the 2026-2027 table:
| Area detail | Antlerless planning issue |
|---|---|
| Northeastern and Southeastern rows | Antlerless deer are listed for all open days of applicable antlered archery, blackpowder, and gun seasons. |
| Central row | Antlerless opportunity follows all open days of the listed weapon seasons. |
| Western row for Buncombe, Henderson, and McDowell | Gun antlerless dates can be limited to Nov. 28-Dec. 5 in listed county areas, with boundary exceptions. |
| Western row for Cherokee, Clay, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Swain, and Transylvania | Blackpowder antlerless is Nov. 21-27, and gun antlerless is Nov. 28 only. |
| Graham County | Blackpowder antlerless is Nov. 21 only; gun antlerless is none. |
That is why a map article matters. The statewide gun season end date does not tell you whether antlerless gun harvest is legal on your exact date and county.
Bag Limit and Big Game Harvest Report Card
North Carolina’s deer bag limit is 6 deer for the season and possession limit. No more than 2 may be antlered, and up to 4 may be antlerless. NCWRC says there is no daily bag limit.
Bonus Antlerless Harvest Report Cards can allow two additional antlerless deer per card, but those are only valid in participating municipalities during Urban Archery Season. DMAP and related program tags also have special rules and do not count the same way as normal statewide bag limits.
Every deer hunter needs the harvest reporting workflow ready. NCWRC says hunters must carry a valid paper Big Game Harvest Report Card or electronic version while hunting deer, bear, or wild turkey. The card is valid for one hunting season, July 1 through June 30.
After harvest, the hunter must validate the card before moving the deer from the site of kill. Then the harvest must be registered before the deer is skinned, dismembered, left unattended, placed in another person’s possession, or by noon the day after harvest.
License and Big Game Privilege
North Carolina’s license path separates the hunting license from big-game privileges in many cases.
The annual State Hunting License authorizes statewide hunting but does not include big game hunting. NCWRC lists the Big Game Hunting privilege as needed to hunt deer, bear, and wild turkey, in addition to the hunting license.
For residents, the Comprehensive Hunting license includes big game, game lands, and waterfowl privileges, but does not include every stamp or bear-specific item. For nonresidents, the annual State Hunting License and Big Game Hunting privilege are separate items unless a license product says otherwise.
Before hunting deer, confirm:
- Resident or nonresident status.
- Hunting license.
- Big Game Hunting privilege.
- Big Game Harvest Report Card.
- Hunter education or apprentice permit status if applicable.
- Game land or permit hunt requirements.
Youth Days, Urban Archery, and Game Lands
NCWRC lists Youth Deer Hunting Days for September 26-27, 2026 statewide and November 26-27, 2026 for the Western Deer Season. On those days, hunters under age 16 may use any legal weapon for antlered or antlerless deer. Hunters age 16 and older must use the weapon legal for the season open in the county, and all hunters must wear hunter orange.
Urban Archery is separate from the main statewide map. For 2027, the participating-municipality season is listed as January 9-February 14, 2027 on the deer regulations page. Because municipality participation and local maps control access, verify the city or town page before using any Urban Archery date.
Game lands need a separate check. Some game lands do not follow the county season, and permit hunts, local laws, or antlerless dates may differ.
Before You Hunt North Carolina Deer
Use this checklist:
- Use the NCWRC deer zone map or county table to identify the correct row.
- Check whether the property is in a CWD Management Area.
- Match the date to archery, blackpowder, gun, youth, or special early season.
- Confirm whether the deer is antlered or antlerless under the table.
- Confirm the 6-deer season limit, 2-antlered cap, and 4-antlerless cap.
- Buy or confirm the hunting license and Big Game Hunting privilege.
- Carry the Big Game Harvest Report Card or electronic equivalent.
- Validate the harvest before moving the deer.
- Register the harvest before the NCWRC deadline.
- Check game land, local law, DMAP, Urban Archery, and CWD rules before hunting.
North Carolina’s season map is useful because the state has several regional timing systems at once. The reliable answer is county, zone row, weapon season, antlerless rule, license privilege, and harvest report card.
