South Carolina deer season depends on Game Zone, land type, tags, and Game Check
SCDNR's 2026-2027 private-land framework starts as early as August 15 in Game Zones 3 and 4, September 15 in Game Zone 2, and October 1 primitive weapons in Game Zone 1. All harvested deer must be tagged before moving and reported through SC Game Check by midnight on the day of harvest.
Game Zones 3 and 4 open on private land for archery, with early buck-only limits before September 15.
Private-land archery opens September 15, then primitive weapons and gun seasons follow.
Private-land primitive weapons opens October 1, and gun hunts begin October 11.
SC Game Check reporting is due by midnight on the day of harvest.
South Carolina Deer Season 2026-2027: The Short Version
South Carolina deer season is built around Game Zones. The private-land calendar starts earliest in the lower-state zones and later in the mountain zone. SCDNR also changed the resident base deer tag set for 2026-2027, so returning hunters should not rely on an old tag count.
| South Carolina private-land Game Zone | 2026-2027 date framework | Main planning point |
|---|---|---|
| Game Zone 1 | Primitive weapons Oct. 1-10; gun hunts Oct. 11-Jan. 1 | Antlerless tags are valid later in Zone 1 than in the other zones. |
| Game Zone 2 | Archery Sept. 15-30; primitive weapons Oct. 1-10; gun hunts Oct. 11-Jan. 1 | Archery starts September 15, then weapon seasons layer in. |
| Game Zone 3 | Archery and gun hunts Aug. 15-Jan. 1, with Aug. 15-Sept. 14 buck-only | Earliest private-land opener, but early dates are buck-only. |
| Game Zone 4 | Archery Aug. 15-31; gun hunts Sept. 1-Jan. 1, with Aug. 15-Sept. 14 buck-only | Gun season starts September 1, but early dates are still buck-only. |
All harvested deer must be tagged before being moved from the point of kill. The harvest must then be reported through SC Game Check by midnight on the day of harvest and before leaving a deer with a processor.

Game Zones Control the Date
South Carolina is not a one-date deer state. Game Zones 3 and 4 open on private land on August 15, while Game Zone 2 opens with archery on September 15 and Game Zone 1 starts with primitive weapons on October 1.
The August 15 through September 14 period in Game Zones 3 and 4 is buck-only under the private-land table. Do not treat the earliest opener as an either-sex opener.
SCDNR also lists private-land youth deer hunt days:
| Game Zone | Private-land youth deer hunt days |
|---|---|
| Game Zones 3 and 4 | August 8, antlered deer only, limit 1; January 2, either-sex, limit 2 |
| Game Zone 2 | September 12, antlered deer only, limit 1; January 2, either-sex, limit 2 |
| Game Zone 1 | September 26, antlered deer only, limit 1; January 2, either-sex, limit 2 |
Youth hunt days have their own rules. SCDNR says youth age 17 and younger may use those days, and youth who have not completed hunter education must be accompanied by an adult at least 21.
Tags, Antlered Limits, and Antlerless Limits
South Carolina requires a tag on every harvested deer before the deer is moved. For 2026-2027, SCDNR’s license table lists the resident free base set as 6 total tags: 3 unrestricted antlered tags and 3 individual antlerless tags.
The statewide antlered deer limit is:
| Hunter type | Antlered deer limit |
|---|---|
| Resident | 2 per day, 5 total across all seasons and methods |
| Nonresident | 2 per day, 4 total across all seasons and methods |
Antlerless deer are limited to 2 per day and must be tagged with an Individual Antlerless Deer Tag. Zone-specific seasonal limits still matter. Game Zone 1 lists 3 total antlerless deer across all seasons and methods. Game Zones 2, 3, and 4 list 9 total.
Individual Antlerless Deer Tags are valid in Game Zones 2, 3, and 4 beginning September 15, and in Game Zone 1 beginning October 1. Tags do not change the legal weapon for a special weapon season and do not override daily or seasonal limits.
License and Big Game Permit Path
South Carolina deer hunters generally need:
- A valid hunting license.
- A Big Game Permit to hunt deer, bear, or turkey.
- Deer tags.
- A WMA permit if hunting WMA lands.
- Hunter education compliance if required.
SCDNR lists the annual resident State Hunting License at $12 and the annual resident Big Game Permit at $6. The annual nonresident State Hunting License is listed at $125, and the annual nonresident Big Game Permit at $100. Resident combination or sportsman licenses may bundle hunting and big-game privileges.
Tags matter as much as the license. SCDNR says resident hunters with active licenses and big-game permits when deer season begins will automatically receive their base tags in late July. Hunters renewing close to season should allow time for tags to arrive or use SCDNR’s temporary tag path if needed.
South Carolina’s tag law also changes on January 2, 2027. Because the regular private-land deer season closes January 1 and the January 2 youth hunts are tag-exempt, do not use this article to decide a late-issued tag package without checking the current SCDNR deer tag page.
SC Game Check and Processors
South Carolina’s deer workflow has two hard checkpoints:
- Tag the deer at the point of kill before moving it.
- Report the harvest through SC Game Check by midnight on the day of harvest.
SCDNR lists several reporting methods: the Go Outdoors SC app, online Game Check, text reporting, and the SC Game Check phone line. After reporting, hunters receive a confirmation number.
If a deer is taken to a processor, the hunter must provide that confirmation number when the deer is dropped off. SCDNR says processors may not accept untagged deer.
WMA, Quota, and Public-Land Caveats
The private-land Game Zone table is not the full public-land calendar. South Carolina WMAs can have their own seasons, limits, draw hunts, check-in rules, and property-specific restrictions.
SCDNR also separates the Deer Quota Program from normal individual tag rules. On Deer Quota Program properties, the quota is issued to the tract and tags are valid only on that tract. Normal statewide, Game Zone, and daily limits do not apply the same way on those enrolled properties.
Before hunting public or quota land, confirm:
- The WMA or property name.
- Whether deer hunting is open on that date.
- Weapon method and legal deer for that property.
- Whether a WMA permit, lottery, quota, or check-in is required.
- Tag type and SC Game Check reporting path.
Before You Hunt South Carolina Deer
Use this checklist:
- Confirm the Game Zone.
- Confirm whether the hunt is private land, WMA, or Deer Quota Program land.
- Match the date to archery, primitive weapons, gun, youth, or buck-only language.
- Confirm antlered and antlerless tag availability before the hunt.
- Buy or confirm the hunting license and Big Game Permit.
- Add WMA permit if needed.
- Tag the deer before moving it from the kill site.
- Report the deer through SC Game Check by midnight.
- Keep the confirmation number, especially if using a processor.
South Carolina’s deer opportunity is long, but the legal plan is specific: Game Zone, land type, weapon method, tag, and Game Check all have to line up.
